Various menu settings can be selected and set as with cellular phones. Ease of operation has been greatly improved even though it is the world's smallest size recorder.

The MZ-R91/90 is the first of its kind to incorporate the Name Bank function, which will delight all music fans. Once the name of a favorite group has been entered in the name bank - capable of storing up to 500 characters - only the first three letters need to be entered the next time the same band is recorded. This saves time by eliminating duplicated inputs. A new compilation can be given a title before the recording is finished. With the aid of an optional cable, the Joint Text function allows all the data on a CD (including CD text, where applicable) to be transferred when recording from CD to MD. The advantages of the MiniDisc are particularly prominent when playing sport and traveling. Music could hardly be more mobile than with the MZ-R91/90.
